Ancient Arkesini

Ancient Arkesini Amorgos | Anemolithi Studios Hotel Amorgos Greece

Arkesisni was one of the ancient cities of Amorgos, which dates back to the Cycladic Era (4th – 3rd millennium BC). It was an Ionian colony under the rule of Naxos. Ancient Arkesini is located in the area of Kastri, which is considered one of the loveliest spots on the island, with a superb view of the Aegean, the Small Cyclades Islands and the northern part of Amorgos.

To visit the archaeological site, you must follow a path that starts in Vroutsis. The Arkesini Acropolis was an impregnable fortification carved in rock. Today, it is an impressive monument, where you can admire ruins of the ramparts, the gate and several houses.

Although no systematic excavation of Ancient Arkesini has been carried out, a variety of artefacts have been found in the area, such as coins, parts of statues, inscriptions, pottery, etc, mainly from the Classical Era. Another ancient artifacts found on the site was the “Treasure of Arkesini” from the Post-Byzantine Era, which is displayed in the Numismatic Museum in Athens.
